C. would have loved to play a game of bball or at least visited 'hoops the gym, the house that michael jordan built'. work piled in very very last minute and unavoidably could not postpone as much as i tried to work around it. i sincerely just hope it pays off in the end. finger's crossed. so sadly i'm unable to attend this weekend's inaugural C2E2 event. see how sad jordan is as well i couldn't make it. biggest apologies to everyone who was gonna catch up with me at this event. hopefully i'll catch up with u at the next con.

so, for those that have been following me on twitter, i mentioned a wee while back that i had to draw/design this character below, the melter, to hopefully make him look kinda cool and contemporary. especially since i have to be drawing him on several pages of the next issue i'm working on.

needless to say, i found it really really hard especially with his flowing puffy sleeves and groovy peter pan boots with ribbed green tights. luckily upon further googling, i found that there were variations in his costume designs even though there were just very slight. still... phew...

so using the 3 images, i conceptualise something that will hopefully work. the third one, i'm happy with. happy enough that it won't drive me up the wall whilst drawing him on several panels of pages.

here's a bigger shot. i couldn't help thinking his shape and design is slightly reminiscent of nite owl from the watchmen movie. but it kinda works right?

apologies. late upload. had internet access while i was at leeds thought bubble festival on friday, but it failed so many times as the connection was slow. good old logan. with bloody claws. this piece was for a mate's son as a pressie. i contemplated hard whether or not to add all that blood on the piece since it was for a yougling. but i remembered my friend mentioning he lets his kid read the wolverine comics so i figured he's probably already accustomed to the violence and wreckage that wolverine embarks on his adventures. so what would wolverine be without his bloody claws. worse case scenario, my mate can explain that wolverine really really likes tomato juice.

as in small. ant-man small. ahh, the english language. anyways, a completely different type of style for this sequential page from an issue of the marvel heroes UK comic. written by the talented al ewing, i just felt it needed a bit more of a light hearted approach. so i adopted an animated type style for all the macho posturing ant-man will be doing in the story. lucky for me i had already previously worked on batman strikes which i had to adapt my style to suit the book and character designs of jeff matsuda. so the style change was a cinch.

so. uhm. yea. my over ambitious attempt to upload a sketch of the day everyday failed completely. ended up being a sketch every other day and even sometimes, a sketch every other week. in the end, work, deadlines and a little bit of life caught me in a bind. as much as i would have loved to do a sketch everyday, time just became a crucial factor. so i'm now introducting PIECE OF THE DAY(POTD) and SKETCH OF THE WEEK(SOTW) just to take the pressure off a bit.

the beauty of POTD is that the work is done. just showcasing stuff i've been up to for these so called deadlines i'm always talking about. i will try my bestest to upload at least one piece a day. included will also be sketches i've done back in the day or at conventions but just simply haven't had the opportunity to show. and with SOTW, i will upload a sketch towards the end of every week, mainly friday.

so to kick things off, here is a piece commissioned by my mate, michael finn. he's infamous '1 minute later' collection whereby i take an original cover, in this particular instance, x-men #19, and turn it into another cover of what happens one minute after.

well, more like sketches of the day. and, oh, this wasn't done today. this was done yesterday. the pieces i mentioned yesterday that i couldn't show until i got the a-ok from creator barry nugent. it's a-ok-ed. so here it is. mate barry's got his new book out. asked if i wanted to kick start the possible 'uhhumm' side of things with some character designs and i jumped. love designing. don't get the chance to do them that often so when an opportunity like this comes along, i jump, skip, somersault. so flat out today and i probably won't, yea, i know, be able to get any quick sketches done for SOTD. but hey, i did three yesterday. i'm sure i'm good for a few days. check out barry's website, http://www.unseenshadows.co.uk for more info on the book. below is the composite from the individual character designs i did.

you knew this fella was coming. of course u have to have a logan in sketch. there will probably be many more of this dude. probably one of the best character to sketch. this is for yesterday. wasn't able to get to a scanner. did this at lunch whilst buying my new comp. yep. after teasing me with the possiblity of yabastich working in full, it crashed, burned and died. worked well for oh 5 hours or so. then just slowed down. and the last time i tried to reboot, it just never quite got there. i've laid loyal yabastich for 5 years to rest. so now, yabastich numero dos is born. working a treat. have moved on. i don't mourn for long. :)

didn't have the scanner available to me yesterday. a tad late. picture of what i was doing yesterday. computer revived but still scarilly slow. played itunes today and one song stopped and started about 10 times. hmmm. plus side, computer has been stripped to its bare minimum. no bullshit apps. i think the comp is on its last legs. might have to start saving up for a new one. hopefully further down the line than sooner. still wouldn't mind working on art pieces for once without a lag and wait time. it'll be nice to have a good flow again. i remember once upon a time, this computer was like so. software improves, starts to slow down what use to be a seamless streaming computer a while back. exciting times. oh. and i forgot to back up my fonts. frak.

ok. i've had so many stop start attempts at doing sketch of the day. so many great artist do it. one that definitely springs to mind was the late mike wieringo. he was inspirational and admired him for literally having a sketch a day for the fans and most likely for himself. and it's such a great way of getting the juices flowing to begin a new day. so today i begin again. a sketch a day. this will also be great for when i'm putting my sketchbook together. i've set my calendar to remind me every morning at 8am for a year to set aside 5 maybe 10 minutes to do a quick sketch at the least. too many things stop me. never again.

hey fellow comic lovers, just thought i'd give everyone a heads up that i'm experimenting a new technique/style (kinda new-ish, but probably not that new for those seasoned convention goers) for sketches this year. so everyone knows what to expect if you do ask for a sketch at one of the convention/shows i'm attending for 2009. here's a colour one i baked in the oven the other day for a mate. there will be of course grayscale sketches too. just imagine the piece below in gray!!!! CONVENTION EVENTS SEASON 2009

conventions and events season is about to start for me. it'll begin in early may and finish in late november. i was gonna try to attend birmingham international comics show and the second show for the london mcm expo in october but instead am attending a wedding, brother's birthday and family reunion in far away lands. so all of october is out for me unfortunately.

begins next weekend on may 2nd at the 'they walk among us' comic shop in richmond for the comic free day event. will be sketching and signing from 1pm onwards with artists extraordinaire frazer irving and emma vieceli. please click on the banner below for more details to the event...

first piece is of 'hotwire' brain child of stephan nilson and wesley gunn. appeared in my first ever batman strikes book that i did for DC comics. this piece was drawn for stephan just cause he asked and he was a super cool guy to work with! :)

ming the merciless was drawn for a house warming present for a mate who coincidentally is also called ming. hence could not resist. even though i could have drawn a star wars character which he's a fan of, but what would be the fun in that? :)

finally, ms. marvel piece drawn at a convention sometime, somewhere, can't remember. :)

sorry for the lack of updates everyone. since the last entry, i've been flatout leading up to the new york comic con 2009 and was basically running around like a loon trying to meet deadlines and prepare for the trip. nycc was excellent. had a brilliant time and always glad to meet new people and catch up with old friends i haven't caught up since the last con. since coming back though, as usual, been playing catch up with deadlines and again, hit the ground running. so finally, i have a wee moment, thought i'd put through a new entry. and since i haven't updated in almost a month, thought i'd put up a bunch of stuff to make up for it.

first up, exalted is getting an artbook compiled and some of my artwork from the last 7 years of working with them will be featured in it along with works from other great artists. below are three of such pieces! the art of exalted book will be out late february, early march and is 160 pages, full colour, chock full of art. so do please check it out if you get the chance.

next are four batman strikes covers i've done for johnny DC before the last issue was published in late 2008. the title ended on issue 50 to coincide with the batman cartoon ending its run also. i had great fun working on these as i got to explore a more cartoony side of my art style.

here are two sketches from my no longer available PHWOAR sketchbook, bloodrayne and gambit plus a convention sketch of emma frost i did not that far back.

continuing with sketches, back in november 2008, i posted an entry with a sketch of he-man from my PHWOAR sketchbook. thanks to waki and james, they decided to take it to the next level with some inks and colours respectively. seen here, john 'waki' wycough delivers the inks from my sketch whilst long time collaborator, james offredi delivers the colours straight from my sketch.

here's some sequentials from issue 169 of spectacular spiderman UK. this storyline was a two parter with ultron as the ultimate nemesis. the books came out at a time to coincide with the release of the ironman movie. hence the ironman cameo! inks by kris justice. colours by james offredi.

sometimes, if i have enough time in the scheduling, before i proceed to thumbnailing, final sequentialing and the likes, i like to character design the strip out. below are the characters involved in issue 184 of spectacular spider-man UK. this process also just makes it a lot easier when it comes time to final pencils cause then you don't have to create a character on the go and it's easier to reference if the same character appears in various parts of the strip.

finally here are three pages of a back up story i did a while back for the DCU title, tangent superman's reign issue 7. coming in virtually halfway of the 12 issue run, i had to, as close as possible, emulate the art styling of fernando pasarin, which was fun to do as i got to explore the art of shadowing which i normally don't get to do with my usual art style. inks by mark mckenna.
